문화로 복음을 전하다 Proclaiming the Gospel Through the Arts

저는 한국에서 5대째 기독교 신앙을 이어온 가정에서 태어나고 자랐습니다. 저희 가문의 신앙은 한반도가 분단되기 전 처음으로 복음을 전한 선교사들의 시대까지 거슬러 올라갑니다. 저의 조부모님이 어렸을 때, 증조부님이 현재 북한 지역에서 신학을 공부하셨습니다. 공산주의 정권이 기독교인들을 박해하기 시작하자, 조부모님은 신앙을 지키기 위해 남쪽으로 피난하셨습니다. 이러한 유산 덕분에 저는 복음과 교회 안에서 자랐습니다. 어릴 때부터 복음을 머리로는 알았지만, 마음으로는 믿지 않았습니다. 초등학교 5학년 때, 믿지 않는 친한 친구와 함께 교회 수련회에 참석했습니다. 수련회에서 나중에 친구에게 복음을 전하려는 마음으로 복음 메시지를 주의 깊게 들었습니다. 메시지에 집중하면서, 저 역시 그 동일한 사랑이 필요한 죄인임을, 그리고 예수님의 사랑이 저를 위한 것이기도 함을 깨달았습니다. 그 순간, 저는 예수님을 개인 구주로 영접하고 믿음으로 나아갔습니다. 그 경험 이후 삶에 대한 더 깊은 질문들을 하기 시작했습니다. 왜 태어났는지, 죽고 나면 어디로 가는지, 하나님이 나를 위해 가지신 목적이 무엇인지. 주위를 둘러보니 예수님에 대해 들어본 적 없는 친구들이 얼마나 많은지 알게 되었습니다. 특히 정부의 제한으로 여전히 복음을 들을 기회조차 없는 북한 주민들에 대한 조부모님의 이야기를 들었을 때 더욱 마음이 무거워졌습니다. 제가 거저 받은 것을 많은 사람들이 평생 접하지 못할 수도 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그 깨달음이 복음 전도와 선교를 향한 마음에 불을 붙였습니다.

I was born and raised in South Korea as a fifth-generation Christian. My family's faith traces back to the very first missionaries who brought the gospel to Korea before the nation was divided. During my grandparents' childhood, my great-grandfather studied theology in what is now North Korea. When the Communist regime began to persecute Christians, my grandparents fled south to preserve their faith. Because of this legacy, I grew up surrounded by the gospel and the church. From a young age, I understood the gospel in my head, but not in my heart. In fifth grade, I attended a church retreat with a close friend who wasn't a believer. During the retreat, I listened carefully to the gospel message so that I could share it with my friend. As I focused on the message, I came to recognize that I was also a sinner in need of that same love, and that the love of Jesus was meant for me as well. In that moment, I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior and stepped forward in faith. After that experience, I began to ask deeper questions about life — why I was born, where I would go after death, and what purpose God had for me. As I looked around, I noticed how many of my friends had never heard about Jesus. I was especially burdened when I heard my grandparents' stories about those in North Korea who still have no opportunity to hear the gospel because of government restrictions. I realized that something I had freely received was something many people might never encounter in their lifetime. That realization sparked my heart for evangelism and missions.
