May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)"
When I was just seven years old, the terrifying reality of hell gripped my heart. Wanting to know how I could escape such a place, I asked my father how I could be sure I would not go to hell. He sat me down in the living room of our home and carefully walked me through the gospel, emphasizing my need for Jesus Christ alone. At the end, I prayed with my father and went on with life. As I grew older, however, instead of growing closer to God, I drifted further away from Him. I chose to go my own way, indulging in sin and chasing pleasure. Before long, my life became a complete mess. I hid my sinful lifestyle from my family and from everyone at church, living a double life. (James 4:13-17) It took a near-death experience, a 30-foot fall down a mountainside, to wake me up and cause me to start seeking God again. Not long after, I attended a young adults’ retreat at a church and ended up staying at their youth camp for the rest of the summer. It was there that I fell in love with the Word of God and began to realize just how little I truly knew about Him. (Matt 7:21-23) That growing passion led me to attend Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, New York, to study God’s Word more deeply. During my time there, I came to understand the true reality of the gospel. No matter how far I had wandered, God extended His hand of mercy to me through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In my first month at Bible school, as I memorized Scripture for class and read the Bible daily, God began to teach me more and more about His gospel. One day during that first month, I went down to the edge of the lake to be alone with God. There, I examined my heart, repented of my sin, and put my faith fully in Jesus Christ. From that moment on, my life was transformed by His grace, and I gained complete assurance of my salvation. (Luke 5:32, Romans 10:9) I continued studying at Bible school for two years. During that time, after attending a missions’ conference and hearing about the great need for missionaries and pastors around the world, my heart grew increasingly burdened for the lost. I did not yet know where I would go or what I would do, but I was willing to go wherever God would send me. (Matt 9:36-38) Shortly after that conference, I was given the opportunity to serve with Word of Life Korea. A year later, I married my wife, Chanjoo, a Korean woman who had also attended Word of Life Bible Institute and was serving as a missionary in South Korea. Today, I live in Korea full-time, serving to tell others, especially young people, about the same gospel that brought me from death to life.
I grew up in a Christian family, and my dad became a pastor during my teenage years. I would have called myself a Christian because I went to church, prayed, and knew God's Word. But during my high school years I began to feel that all these religious activities were a burden. I asked myself why I was doing them. The honest answer was: because my family did them. Instead of placing my faith in Jesus, I was resting on my parents' faith. I knew about Jesus, but I had no relationship with Him. In college I went through a confusing and dark time, falling deeper into sin. Nothing could satisfy me, and that emptiness only led to more sin and deception. I tried to hide it from my parents, but it was obvious I was not walking with God. My dad had me attend SYME (School of Youth Ministry in English), and in one of the English classes the teacher always opened with a passage from God's Word. One day she read from the book of Hosea. I could not focus on the rest of the class. For days I kept asking God why He would ask Hosea — a faithful servant — to marry Gomer, a prostitute, and then, after she ran away, to go back and bring her home again. Through that passage I realized I was no different from Gomer, and that Hosea was a picture of Jesus Christ. God had written that story long before Jesus came to earth to illustrate the gospel. We all belong to God, but we are separated from Him because of sin — and like Gomer, I had given myself to idols to fill the emptiness. But God sent His only perfect Son, who knew no sin, into this world to pay for our sins — just as Hosea paid to bring Gomer back. I repented of my sins and asked Him to be the Lord of my life. There are many churches in South Korea, but very few young people inside them. My heart is to share the gospel with those who grew up in church or call themselves Christians, but have never truly understood it — so that they will then share it with those around them. I pray that God will use our international family and our children as a tool for His ministry. My testimony will never stop until I meet Him again, for He is still working in my life every single day.
