확신으로 복음을 전하다 Proclaiming the Gospel with Conviction

교회를 다니며 자라는 동안 대부분의 시간 동안, 저는 복음에 대해 저 자신도 모르게 혼란스럽게 하는 것들을 배웠습니다. 그로 인해 구원받기 위해서는 "살아있는" 믿음을 유지해야 한다고 생각했고, 그래서 구원의 확신을 가질 수 없었습니다. 이미 심했던 죽음에 대한 두려움 위에, 끝까지 "견뎌낼" 수 있을지, 결국 지옥에 가게 되는 건 아닐지 하는 불안이 밤마다 잠 못 들게 했습니다. 그런데 예수님은 자신을 믿는 모든 자에게 영생을 약속하셨습니다. 따라서 내 영원한 운명에 대해 확신이 없었기에, 저는 구원의 약속을 믿지 못했던 것입니다. 많은 스트레스와 불안 속에서 요한복음을 반복해서 읽어가던 중, 마침내 예수님의 영생 약속을 믿음으로써 영생을 얻는다는 것을 확신하게 되었고, 그때 거듭나 죄의 형벌에서 구원받았습니다. 이제 조금의 의심도 없이 하나님의 자녀로서 영생을 약속받았음을 알기에, 의무나 두려움이 아닌 감사함으로, 잃어버린 자들을 향한 사랑으로 주님을 섬기는 데 집중할 수 있게 되었습니다. 하지만 올바른 복음을 믿기 전에도, 저는 여전히 기독교가 참이라고 믿었습니다. 그런데 어떤 경험이나 개인적인 간증만으로는 기독교가 참임을 증명하기에 충분하지 않습니다. 오직 증거만이 증명할 수 있습니다… 그리고 우리에게는 충분한 증거가 있습니다! 기독교는 참입니다. 왜냐하면 나사렛 사람 예수 그리스도가 그가 주장한 대로 육신으로 오신 하나님, 하나님의 아들이셨다는 것이 합리적인 의심의 여지 없이 증거로 입증되었기 때문입니다. 그분은 죽은 자들 가운데서 부활하심으로 이것을 증명하셨고, 그것은 그분이 죽음을 이기는 권세가 있으며, 십자가의 희생을 통해 인류의 죄를 용서하는 권한이 있음을 보여줍니다. 이 사건이 역사적 사실임을 알 수 있기에, 예수님이 그분 자신이 말씀하신 그분임을, 즉 그분의 입에서 나온 모든 말씀이 하나님의 말씀이었음을 알 수 있습니다. 따라서 예수님을 믿는 자에게 주시는 영생의 약속은 완전히 신뢰할 수 있습니다! "썩는 양식을 위하여 일하지 말고 영생하도록 있는 양식을 위하여 하라 이것은 인자가 너희에게 주리니 인자는 아버지 하나님의 인치신 자니라 하시니 그들이 묻되 우리가 어떻게 하여야 하나님의 일을 하오리이까 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 하나님께서 보내신 이를 믿는 것이 하나님의 일이니라" (요한복음 6:27-29)

For most of my life growing up in the church I was taught certain things about the gospel that confused me without me knowing it. Because of this, I relied on having a "working" faith in order to be saved, so I could never have certainty of my salvation. On top of my already intense fear of death and dying, the uncertainty of whether or not I'd "persevere" to the end and end up going to hell kept me awake many nights. But Jesus promised eternal life to all who believe in him for it. Therefore, since I never was sure of my eternal destiny, I never believed the promise which saves. I was born again and saved from the penalty of sin after much stress and anxiety going through the gospel of John over and over again, when I finally was persuaded that I had eternal life just by believing Jesus' promise of eternal life. Now that I know I am a child of God with a promised inheritance of eternal life without a single doubt, I am able to focus on serving the Lord out of gratitude instead of obligation or fear, out of love for the lost. But even before I believed the right gospel, I still believed that Christianity was true. But some experience or personal testimony is not enough to prove that Christianity is true, only evidence is... and we have sufficient evidence! Christianity is true because it is proven by the evidence, beyond reasonable doubt, that the man Jesus Christ of Nazareth was indeed God in the flesh, the Son of God, as he claimed. He proved this by raising himself from the dead, to show that he has power over death, and the authority to forgive mankind of their sins through the sacrificial payment on the cross. Because we can know this event is historically factual, we can know that Jesus is who he said he is, meaning that every word out of his mouth was God speaking. Therefore, the promise of eternal life to the one who believes in Jesus for it is fully trustworthy! "'Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.' Then they said to him, 'What must we do, to be doing the works of God?' Jesus answered them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.'" (John 6:27-29)
